Synthesis Blog #2

When I was younger I was a good reader. It was not until junior year of high school when I would read and be completely side tracked and not realize until I’m 30 pages in and stop and think about how I’m lost. Who is this character or what does this word even mean?

Going through this has taught me how I want to effectively read with the class. I think that doing readings in class is really helpful to the student. This allows for breaks when students do not understand. Me, the teacher, could give my own explanation. But one way that I think is very effective and also involving, is by allowing the other students to explain it. This would allow for them to learn from each other. This also tells me what they are getting from the passing and making sure the reading is understood by all. This could be done at the end of a section or chapter. The students could also raise their hands during the reading to allow me to know when they become confused. By doing this it would let the students know that it’s okay to struggle and that we all do it.

Teacher’s are building the future. How can we build a future that thinks they have to be perfect? It’s impossible. So my goal is to tell my students let’s all be imperfect together.

  1. Corben, you made some excellent points about how to create environments for students to allow them to make mistakes and not feel beaten down by them. I feel like that happens way to often in classrooms. I believe it is very important for teachers to be able to create learners who are okay with being wrong some times and realizing that being wrong creates opportunities for growth. In a previous class I took, we watched a video where the teacher would intentionally make mistakes in reading content to the class so as to better create this same sort of environment. through the video I saw that students felt comfortable pointing out the teachers mistakes and it wasn't harsh or mean but rather just a learning experience. I think making those calculated mistakes can be a great way to instill in students that it is okay to be wrong and that we can all be imperfect together.

  2. Hey Corben! You bring up a great point. I think many students, including myself, struggle with this same thing. Reading comprehension isn’t easy, especially when the text you are reading is very dense. I think it is so important as future educators for us to think about this and make sure we are creating an environment in our classrooms where students feel comfortable asking questions when they don’t understand. One of the things that stood out to me from this week's reading is the importance of reading across the curriculum. It is so important to make sure we are integrating literary elements in all of our classes. Great post!
